About UCD Services

UCD Services is a free knowledge base that explains how user-centred design practice and the UK Government Digital Service delivery approach fit together. It covers the Design Council's Double Diamond, the Service Standard, the Discovery → Alpha → Beta → Live phases, practical UCD methods, and how these frameworks reinforce each other.

Who it is for

Service designers, user researchers, product managers, delivery managers, content designers, and engineers working on public services — especially in UK government, but the ideas apply wherever teams build services for real people. It is also useful for suppliers, academics, and anyone learning how modern digital services are delivered.

Independence

UCD Services is an independent resource. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or published by GOV.UK, the Government Digital Service, or the Design Council.

We attribute primary sources — GOV.UK content under the Open Government Licence, and the Design Council for the Double Diamond — and link to official guidance throughout. All explanatory text on this site is written in our own words.
